I know that not every family is a super cereal family. Some prefer hot breakfasts. And while, sure, on some days when there’s no school (i.e. no morning rush), I’ll make eggs or pancakes, on most days, we just love cereal. My kids eat it the normal way. I add some to my Greek yogurt so that I have crunch in every bite. I can’t even tell you what our favorites are because there are so many.
But this isn’t a discussion about cereal. This is about storing cereal.
I’ve been using these Buddeez Cereal Storage Containers for over a decade (actually…like 12 or 13 years) and I LOVE them (Amazon is convenient and all that, but they’re a super deal over at Chewy.com if you don’t mind that they’re called pet food dispensers).
Even though I recently switched over my pantry to Prokeeper Storage Containers (which I love, but that’s a different post), I kept the Buddeez for my cereals. The cereal containers get the most use as they’re handled by the kids on a daily basis, and they’re so super durable. I never had a Buddeez break.
I love the handles (there’s a version without handles too). Note that these are made out of frosted plastic, not the pretty crystal clear plastic like the Prokeepers. Prettiness is an important feature in a storage container (although the Prokeepers are great for more reasons). But, for cereal, it’s about durability and ease of use.
Be careful when you order! I have the 2-gallon containers. They are also listed as 8-quart. (There’s a smaller size that’s 1.5 gallons or 6 quarts). Don’t confuse the 8-quart containers with the 8-gallon size, which Buddeez also makes. Those are huge!
I have 6 Buddeez, and even if there are more cereals than that in the house at a time, I wait until one container empties before I bring another cereal into circulation.
If a bag of cereal contains more than fits in the Buddeez (although they’re big, so most bags fit), I twist the top of the bag and add it to a bin in my pantry labeled “Extra Cereal” and use the cereal there to refill the containers before opening a new box.
I then asked the team what they use to store their cereal. We may as well give you a few favorite options, right?
Here’s how the conversation went:
Victoria: How do you all store your cereals?
Renee: The original boxes. How else do we read the back?
Esti: Same. I have two Rubbermaid containers for when I buy the double bag boxes.
Leah: I use OXO large containers. I have 4 of them. If it doesn’t fit, we don’t have. We rotate cereals.
Shaindy: I use Ikea storage containers. Some don’t hold an entire box. But my family likes 2-3 cereals so I can put the same cereal into two containers.
Ok, then!
There are some more affordable options if you’d like to get your cereals all stored-up. Some, like this 4-pack, are a really amazing deal. But none will give you the size that Buddeez will and you’ll likely be refilling often (unless your family doesn’t eat that much cereal and you only really buy 12 oz boxes).
So, now we ask … how do you store your cereal?
