Yes, they do the best job at holding the ponytail.
Earlier this summer, BCP popped into Rochella Feuer’s salon so she could show us how to make adorable, easy hairstyles for little girls in this post on pigtails and flip buns and this post on twist buns.
And one of the items that she recommended was using these clear elastic ponytail holders. Clear elastics really hold a ponytail/pigtail tighter than any other elastic/ponytail holder. Rochella even recommended doubling up and using two.
The caveat?
Anyone with little girls knows–they’re a big pain to get out of the hair. Kids complain. They cry. And it’s not so easy for us too.
There are some items, like the Pony Pick (probably the best option if you’re going this route) and other ponytail cutters that cut the elastic. In our experience, they tend to pull out hair.

BCP reader Leora wrote to us, “Use a bit of lemon essential oil (from a squeezy syringe that it comes with) to pop rubber band ponies! I make my son two buns every day with clear elastic rubber bands and this is the only completely painless and easy way to get them out in the bath! One or 2 drops on each elastic and they pop from the acidity. And it smells great too! Thanks for all your great content!”

Leora learned this tip from her sister-in-law Rifky. We tried it and it worked like magic. One drop of lemon oil, and “Pop!” It was really cool.

Note that you may need a couple of drops if you’re using a double ponytail. If you don’t hear a pop, it’s because some strands didn’t pop. If only some pop, it’s still easy to slide the elastic out.
If you’re wondering, lemon essential oil is safe and even healthy for hair, but you may want to avoid using this hack in the summertime when kids are out in the sun a lot (no worries, we like these ponytail holders for camp anyway). Lemon oil is safe if it gets on the skin, but might cause some irritation or hair lightening with a lot of sun exposure.
